The Redmi 17 5G is set to make its India debut on September 3, giving buyers another option in the affordable 5G smartphone segment. Xiaomi’s Redmi brand has also launched a dedicated India microsite that confirms several details about the upcoming handset, including its design, colours, display and battery capacity.
The Indian model will closely follow the global version, but there is one notable difference. Redmi is bringing the phone with a larger 7,900mAh battery in India, compared with the 7,500mAh battery offered on the global model.
Launch
Redmi has confirmed that the Redmi 17 5G will launch in India on September 3. The smartphone will be sold through Amazon, according to the India microsite.
The company has also confirmed three colour options for the Indian market: Absolutely Black, Endless Blue and Eternal Orange. In terms of overall design, the Indian version is expected to be identical to the model already launched in select global markets.
More information about the phone is scheduled to be revealed on September 2, just ahead of the official launch.
Battery
The battery is one of the most significant differences between the Indian and global versions. The Redmi 17 5G will feature a 7,900mAh battery in India, which is 400mAh larger than the 7,500mAh unit used by the global variant.
A battery of this size could be useful for users who spend long periods watching videos, browsing social media, gaming or using mobile data. The phone will support 45W wired fast charging, while 22.5W wired reverse charging will allow it to provide power to compatible devices.
Display
The Redmi 17 5G will feature a large 6.9-inch flat display. The panel will support a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, which can make scrolling, animations and supported games appear smoother than on a conventional 60Hz display.
The screen will use a hole-punch cutout for the front camera. With its large size and high refresh rate, the display appears aimed at users who prioritize media consumption and everyday screen responsiveness.
Chipset
Under the hood, the Redmi 17 5G will use Qualcomm’s octa-core Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chipset. The processor is designed for entry-level and budget-oriented 5G smartphones, bringing support for modern connectivity without moving the device into a higher-priced performance category.
Redmi has not yet revealed every India-specific configuration and pricing detail. Those details should become clearer around the launch.
Cameras
For photography, the Redmi 17 5G will have a dual-camera setup on the rear. The primary camera will use a 50-megapixel sensor, while details about the secondary camera have not yet been disclosed.
An LED flash will sit alongside the rear camera system. On the front, the handset will have an 8-megapixel camera positioned within the display’s hole-punch cutout. It will handle selfies and video calls.
The camera hardware is broadly in line with the specifications announced for the global version.
Storage
The Redmi 17 5G was launched in selected global markets on August 10. The global model started at MYR 769, which was approximately Rs. 18,000 at the time, for the base configuration with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
Indian pricing and available configurations are expected to be announced around the September 3 launch. Until then, the global price provides only a rough reference and should not be treated as the confirmed India price.
Comparison
Apart from the battery, the Indian Redmi 17 5G is expected to share its core specifications with the global version.
| Feature | Redmi 17 5G India | Redmi 17 5G Global |
|---|---|---|
| Chipset | Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 | Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 |
