Mercedes-Benz has launched the updated S-Class in India, with prices starting at Rs. 2.20 crore (ex-showroom). Notably, this marks the first time the German luxury carmaker has introduced a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the S-Class in the Indian market.
Bookings for the new model are open from today, while deliveries are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. The luxury sedan is being offered in two special trims at launch: the Launch Edition Exclusive Line and the Manufaktur Edition AMG Line.
Powertrain
The new S-Class PHEV is available in the S 450e variant. It is powered by a 3.0-litre inline-six petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a 22kWh battery pack. The combined output stands at 449bhp and 680Nm of torque.
Mercedes-Benz claims the S 450e can deliver an electric-only driving range of up to 115km. The battery supports fast charging at speeds of up to 60kW. According to the company, the plug-in hybrid sedan offers a claimed fuel efficiency of 32.3kmpl.
Design
Alongside the new powertrain, the updated S-Class receives several visual revisions. These include a redesigned front grille, new alloy wheels, and refreshed tail lamp styling. The overall silhouette remains familiar, retaining the model’s emphasis on comfort and understated luxury.
Features
The S-Class continues to offer an extensive list of features. Highlights include a 13.1-inch infotainment display, twin wireless rear-seat controllers, and a 31-speaker Burmester sound system. Safety equipment includes 15 airbags.
Mercedes-Benz has also introduced two special editions for the Indian market. The Launch Edition Exclusive Line focuses on comfort and luxury, while the Manufaktur Edition AMG Line adds sportier design elements and bespoke interior options.
Competition
In India, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class competes primarily with the BMW 7 Series in the full-size luxury sedan segment. With the introduction of a plug-in hybrid variant, Mercedes-Benz becomes the first among its direct rivals to offer a PHEV option in this category.
