Range Rover is moving closer to the start of its electric era, with production of its first battery-electric models scheduled to begin in September 2026.
The development comes as Tata Motors continues to provide updates across its automotive businesses. The company has outlined plans involving several upcoming models, including new electric vehicles from Jaguar and Range Rover.
The first fully electric Range Rover will add another powertrain option to the luxury SUV brand, which already offers petrol, diesel mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology.
Production
Production of Range Rover EVs is scheduled to begin in September 2026. Tata Motors has indicated that around 12,000 electric vehicles are planned for production during FY27.
The company has not yet disclosed all the technical specifications or detailed production plans for the new Range Rover EV. More information is expected to be announced closer to the start of production.
The move represents an important expansion for Range Rover, as the brand transitions from offering electrified versions of its existing powertrains to a dedicated fully electric model.
Sport
The Range Rover Sport EV prototype was previewed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, United Kingdom.
The model represents the first fully electric Range Rover and is expected to retain the brand’s focus on luxury, off-road capability and performance while switching to battery-electric power.
The introduction of the Sport EV will also broaden the Range Rover powertrain portfolio. Customers will have access to conventional petrol engines, including V8 and six-cylinder options, diesel mild-hybrid powertrains, plug-in hybrid technology and fully electric propulsion.
This gives the brand a wider range of powertrain choices as different markets continue to transition toward electrification.
Range
The electric expansion will not be limited to the Range Rover Sport EV.
Range Rover has also previewed a new model described as a Range Rover GT. The vehicle features a coupe-SUV body style and is positioned as another member of the Range Rover family.
Its design is closer to the Velar in some respects, with a more streamlined profile than the traditional Range Rover SUV shape.
The Range Rover GT is expected to become the fifth member of the Range Rover lineup. It will be based on the EMA, or Electric Modular Architecture, platform developed for next-generation electric vehicles.
Design
The Range Rover GT takes a different approach to exterior proportions compared with the larger and more upright Range Rover models.
Its coupe-SUV design gives it a lower and more streamlined appearance, while the cabin follows a relatively minimalist design philosophy.
Land Rover has not yet revealed the complete technical specification of the model. Details such as battery capacity, electric motor output, driving range and charging performance are expected to be announced at a later stage.
The lack of technical information means it is still too early to make a direct comparison with other luxury electric SUVs.
India
India is expected to be an important market for Range Rover’s electric expansion, although the company’s plans for individual models have not been fully detailed.
The coupe-SUV Range Rover GT is likely to come to India as a completely built unit, or CBU. This would mean the vehicle is manufactured overseas and imported into the Indian market rather than assembled locally.
An India launch would give Range Rover an additional electric offering in the premium SUV segment, alongside its existing lineup.
The timing and pricing of the Range Rover GT for India, however, have not yet been officially confirmed.
Future
The arrival of the Range Rover EV marks a significant step for the brand as it builds an electric alternative alongside its existing petrol, diesel and hybrid models.
Starting production in September 2026 should provide the company with a clearer path toward expanding its electric portfolio, while the planned production volume of 12,000 EVs in FY27 indicates that electric vehicles will become a meaningful part of its future product strategy.
With the Range Rover Sport EV and Range Rover GT both in development, the brand is preparing to cover different parts of the luxury electric SUV market. More information on specifications, pricing and India availability is expected as the models move closer to launch.
