Apple Maps users in India are beginning to get access to the Transit feature, bringing public transport directions and related information to the company’s mapping service.
The rollout was independently verified by Gadgets 360 after the feature was spotted by MacRumors contributing researcher Aaron Perris. Apple has not officially announced the India availability at the time of writing, and the country does not yet appear on Apple’s public list of regions supporting Transit.
The addition could make Apple Maps more useful for people who regularly travel by bus, train and other supported public transport services.
Transit
Apple Maps Transit provides directions for public transport journeys, allowing users to plan trips using supported services.
Depending on the transit system and location, the feature can show departure and arrival times, connections and fare information. Users can also check nearby departures and view major transit routes through a dedicated Transit map.
This brings public transport information into the same navigation experience already used for driving, walking and cycling directions.
Directions
With Transit enabled, users can select public transport when planning a journey. Apple Maps can then provide route options based on available services and scheduled departures.
The feature can also support trip planning around a specific departure or arrival time. This can be useful when a traveler needs to reach a destination at a particular time rather than simply finding the fastest available route.
Apple Maps also includes a Transit Nearby option, allowing users to see nearby departures without first planning a complete journey.
Tracking
In supported locations, Transit can provide additional information about the status of public transport services.
Apple Maps may show service disruptions as well as real-time locations of buses and trains where that data is available. Users can also receive alerts as they approach their selected stop.
The availability of these features can vary according to the transit operator and the data supplied to Apple. As a result, users in India may not necessarily receive every Transit function immediately across all transport networks.
Payments
Apple Maps Transit also supports transport payments in some regions, although the available options depend on the local transport system.
Where supported, passengers may be able to use Apple Pay, add a compatible transit card to Apple Wallet or complete payment through the transport operator’s application.
The arrival of Transit in India does not necessarily mean that all of these payment options will be available with Indian transport services. Payment support depends on individual operators and their integration with Apple’s services.
Availability
Although Transit appears to be working in India, Apple has not yet formally announced the rollout.
India also remains absent from Apple’s public Transit availability page. This creates a difference between the company’s published regional information and what some users are currently seeing in Apple Maps.
The rollout could therefore still be developing, with availability and functionality potentially varying between locations.
For users, the easiest way to check is to open Apple Maps and look for public transport options when planning a route. Features such as schedules, fares, live vehicle information and disruptions may depend on the particular service being searched.
Updates
The Transit rollout follows other recent changes to Apple Maps.
Apple’s iOS 27 update introduced an enhanced Flyover experience that combines aerial imagery with AI to provide more detailed views of cities. The company also introduced Local Lists in the US, offering curated recommendations for restaurants, family-friendly locations and other places based on local trends.
The addition of Transit gives Apple Maps another practical feature for everyday navigation in India. Public transport directions can be particularly useful in cities where buses and rail services are an important part of daily commuting.
For now, the India rollout appears to be available even though Apple has not publicly added the country to its Transit availability list. Users should therefore expect the service to develop as Apple and local transport providers expand coverage and data support.
