BMW India has expanded the X1 lineup with the launch of the X1 Long Wheelbase at an introductory ex-showroom price of Rs. 49.90 lakh. The new version sits alongside the standard-wheelbase X1 and the electric iX1, giving buyers another option if rear-seat space is a priority.

Interestingly, the X1 LWB is priced Rs. 1 lakh lower than the standard X1 and Rs. 1.50 lakh below the iX1 LWB. Its main distinction is the extended wheelbase, which is designed to provide considerably more room for passengers in the second row.

Design

The BMW X1 LWB measures 4,616mm in length, making it 116mm longer than the standard-wheelbase X1. Its wheelbase has been extended by 108mm to 2,800mm.

Most of the additional length is focused on the rear passenger area rather than simply increasing the overall proportions of the SUV.

Visually, the X1 LWB retains much of the design seen on the standard model. It gets LED headlamps and tail lamps, along with 18-inch alloy wheels.

BMW has added some visual touches to distinguish the longer version, including a chrome windowline and silver inserts on the door sills and rear bumper.

The SUV is available in four exterior colours: Mineral White, Carbon Black, Night Dusk Blue and Skyscraper Grey.

Interior

The biggest change is inside the cabin, particularly for passengers sitting in the second row.

The extended wheelbase provides 109mm of additional rear kneeroom, while the rear seat cushion is 15mm longer. This should make the X1 LWB more accommodating for taller passengers and those who regularly travel in the back.

The cabin continues with BMW’s curved display, which combines the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system.

Other equipment includes a fixed glass roof, wireless charging, powered front seats and reclining rear seats.

For luggage, the X1 LWB offers 540 litres of boot space with the rear seats in place. Folding the rear seats increases the available capacity to 1,700 litres.

Engine

Unlike the standard X1, which is available with both petrol and diesel powertrains, the X1 LWB is offered exclusively with a petrol engine.

Power comes from a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol unit producing 154bhp and 230Nm of torque.

The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine remains available with the standard-wheelbase X1, but BMW has not offered it with the new long-wheelbase model.

This means buyers choosing the X1 LWB will have a single engine and transmission combination.

Price

The BMW X1 LWB is priced at Rs. 49.90 lakh, ex-showroom.

Its positioning within the BMW range is notable because the long-wheelbase model costs Rs. 1 lakh less than the standard X1 and Rs. 1.50 lakh less than the iX1 LWB.

ModelEx-showroom price
BMW X1 LWBRs. 49.90 lakh
Standard BMW X1Rs. 50.90 lakh
BMW iX1 LWBRs. 51.40 lakh

The pricing gives buyers another choice within the X1 family, particularly those who place greater importance on rear-seat comfort.

Rivals

The BMW X1 continues to compete with premium compact SUVs such as the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

The X1 LWB, however, takes a slightly different approach by focusing more heavily on rear-seat accommodation. The extended wheelbase and additional kneeroom could make it particularly relevant to buyers who frequently travel with passengers in the second row.

At the same time, buyers looking for an electric powertrain can consider the iX1, while the standard X1 remains available for those who want the conventional wheelbase and a broader engine choice.

The BMW X1 LWB adds more than just extra length to the X1 lineup. Its 108mm longer wheelbase and 109mm increase in rear kneeroom make passenger comfort the central reason to consider the new version. With a 154bhp turbo-petrol engine, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and a Rs. 49.90 lakh ex-showroom price, it offers a distinct alternative to the standard X1. The choice will ultimately come down to whether buyers value the additional rear-seat space and equipment over the wider powertrain options available elsewhere in the X1 range.
