Volvo is preparing to expand its electric vehicle lineup in India with the launch of the EX60 SUV in 2027. The model will become the Swedish automaker’s fourth electric offering in the Indian market and is expected to sit between its smaller and larger EVs in terms of positioning.

The EX60 was revealed globally earlier this year and brings Volvo’s latest electric design and technology to the premium SUV segment. For India, the company is expected to focus on a high-specification version, continuing its recent strategy of introducing well-equipped variants rather than lower-end configurations.

Design

The EX60 follows Volvo’s familiar SUV design language while adding several elements that distinguish it as an electric vehicle.

At the front, the conventional grille has been replaced by a closed-off, grille-less design. The SUV also gets EV-specific wheel designs and a revised interpretation of Volvo’s vertically stacked tail lamps.

The vehicle measures approximately 4.80 metres in length and has a 2.97-metre wheelbase. It offers two rows of seating, placing it firmly in the premium midsize electric SUV category.

The proportions are familiar to Volvo buyers, but the details give the EX60 a more modern appearance suited to the brand’s growing EV lineup.

Interior

Inside, the EX60 takes a different approach to the central infotainment display compared with some of Volvo’s larger models.

While its elder sibling uses a portrait-oriented screen, the EX60 features a landscape-oriented display. The system integrates the vehicle’s major functions into the screen, creating a cleaner dashboard layout.

Volvo is also expected to continue its emphasis on minimalist design, premium materials and technology. As a model positioned above the entry-level end of the electric SUV market, the India-spec EX60 could arrive with a substantial list of standard equipment.

Powertrain

Internationally, the EX60 is available with rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. However, Volvo’s approach to the Indian market suggests that the company could bring a higher-specification AWD version.

The expected P12 AWD variant uses a dual-motor setup producing around 510bhp. This gives the SUV performance figures that place it firmly in the premium performance EV category.

The claimed 0-100kmph acceleration time is 4.6 seconds. That is quick for a family-oriented SUV and should give the EX60 strong performance for highway overtaking and everyday driving.

Range

The EX60 is claimed to offer up to 661km of range, depending on the configuration and testing conditions.

Real-world range will naturally vary based on driving style, road conditions, temperature, vehicle load and use of climate control. For Indian buyers, charging infrastructure and long-distance charging times will therefore remain important factors alongside the headline range figure.

A range figure above 600km could nevertheless make the EX60 more practical for buyers who want an electric SUV capable of longer journeys without frequent charging stops.

Positioning

The EX60 is expected to occupy the middle ground in Volvo’s electric vehicle portfolio for India.

With an anticipated price of up to Rs. 75 lakh, it will target buyers looking for a premium electric SUV with strong performance, advanced technology and a relatively understated design.

The positioning will also allow Volvo to compete against other premium electric SUVs while giving customers an alternative to larger and more expensive EVs.

Rivals

One of the key competitors mentioned for the EX60 in India will be the Tesla Model Y L AWD.

The Tesla is expected to be significantly cheaper, creating a pricing challenge for Volvo. However, the two SUVs will compete for buyers interested in premium electric vehicles, long-range capability and dual-motor performance.

Volvo’s advantage could come from its established premium positioning, Scandinavian design and safety-focused brand identity. Tesla, meanwhile, has a strong reputation for EV technology, charging capability and software.

The final comparison will depend on the India-specification versions, pricing and equipment offered by both manufacturers.

Launch

Volvo is expected to launch the EX60 in India in 2027. The company has not positioned the model as an entry-level electric SUV, and the expected high-specification AWD version could make it a relatively premium offering.

If Volvo brings the 510bhp P12 AWD version with its full technology and equipment package, the EX60 could become an important addition to the company’s Indian EV range. Its combination of performance, claimed range and premium features gives it a clear position in the growing electric SUV market.

The expected price of up to Rs. 75 lakh will be a key factor, particularly against rivals such as the Tesla Model Y L AWD. More details about the India-spec EX60, including final pricing, variants and equipment, are likely to emerge closer to its 2027 launch.
